Alton Ray Pearson
Alton Ray
Pearson was born on 12 October 1893 in Huntington, Emery County, Utah, USA to
John Peter Pearson and Sarah Ellen Mathis.
The population of Emery County in 1900 was over 4,600 people with over
450 farms operating in the county growing crops on over 25,000 acres (20). The town site of Huntington was founded in
the fall of 1880 (22). John was a farmer
and raised hay and grain (4).
His
sister Francis Lee Pearson was born on 23 or 25 December 1895 in Huntington,
Emery County, Utah, USA, but died when she was just a little over a month old
on 31 January 1896.
Alton and
his family more than likely visited the Huntington LDS Tabernacle that was constructed
in 1896 on the west side of Main Street north of the old log meeting house
(22). The two story church was 75feet by
45 feet with a large balcony on the side that circle the north, south and east
sides and was supported by twelve large pillars (22). A Relief Society Hall was also constructed
and used at times used as a theater for the drama club (22).

The Great
Depression began in August 1929 (28) and Utah was one of the hardest hit states
(29). By 1933 Utah’s unemployment rate
was the fourth highest in the nation at 35.8 percent (29). I have no records to show how the Great
Depression effected the Pearson family, but with such wide spread financial
distress it is hard to image they lived through this period unharmed.
.
The 1930
Federal Census shows the family living at East 33rd South, Precinct 104, Salt
Lake County, Utah, USA.
Their
last child ##Child## Pearson was born on ## 1932 in Murray, Salt

The 1940
Federal Census states the family lived at East 45 South Street, Murray, Salt

ensuring explosives are stored properly.
A powder man should be in good health, good eyesight with an experience
in mining, quarrying and handling explosives (24).
