Alton Ray Pearson

 Alton Ray Pearson

Alton Ray Pearson was born on 12 October 1893 in Huntington, Emery County, Utah, USA to John Peter Pearson and Sarah Ellen Mathis.  The population of Emery County in 1900 was over 4,600 people with over 450 farms operating in the county growing crops on over 25,000 acres (20).  The town site of Huntington was founded in the fall of 1880 (22).  John was a farmer and raised hay and grain (4).

His sister Francis Lee Pearson was born on 23 or 25 December 1895 in Huntington, Emery County, Utah, USA, but died when she was just a little over a month old on 31 January 1896.

Alton and his family more than likely visited the Huntington LDS Tabernacle that was constructed in 1896 on the west side of Main Street north of the old log meeting house (22).  The two story church was 75feet by 45 feet with a large balcony on the side that circle the north, south and east sides and was supported by twelve large pillars (22).  A Relief Society Hall was also constructed and used at times used as a theater for the drama club (22).

Alton’s sister Dora May Pearson was born 26 August 1897 in Huntington, but she died on 15 January 1898 in Huntington when she was four months old.

His brother Oren Heber Pearson was born on 27 November 1898 in Huntington.  The 1900 Federal Census shows the family stilled lived in Huntington.

His sister Zetta Pearson was born on 21 April 1901 in Huntington, but died on 29 November 1901 in Huntington from burns (26, 31).

His sister Zelpha Pearson was born on 09 October 1902 in Huntington.  Next, his sister Nellie Pearson was born on 03 April 1905 in Huntington.  His sister Alice Pearson was born on 23 July 1907 in Huntington.

His brother Von Mathis Pearson was born on 29 March 1910 in Castle Dale, Emery County, Utah, USA.

According to the 1910 Federal Census the family livened in Castle Dale.

His sister Nina Pearson was born on 19 December 1912 in Castle Dale and she died on 27 December 1913 in Castle Dale from Cystitis (27).
.
Alton married Alice Ethel Ware on 14 October 1915 in Manti, Emery County, Utah, USA.

His twin brother Earl Thomas Pearson and sister Verl Pearson were born on 28 June 1916 in Castle Dale.

Alton and Alice’s first son ##Child## Pearson was born on ### 1916 in Orangeville, Emery County, Utah, USA.  Happiness was short lived, because Alice Ethel Ware died on 22 September 1916 in Orangeville, Emery County, Utah, USA.

Alton and Myrtle Pricillia Mower had their first child ##Child## Pearson on ### 1917 in Fairview, Sanpete County, Utah, USA.  Alton lived in Emery County, Utah, USA from 1917 to 1918.

Alton married Myrtle Pricillia Mower on 22 July 1920 in Price, Carbon County, Utah, USA.  They had their second child ##Child## Pearson on ### 1921 in Castle Dale, Emery County, Utah, USA.  Next, daughter ##Child##Pearson was born on ### 1924 in Garfield, Garfield County, Utah, USA.  Daughter ##Child##Pearson born was born in 1929 in Utah, USA.

The Great Depression began in August 1929 (28) and Utah was one of the hardest hit states (29).  By 1933 Utah’s unemployment rate was the fourth highest in the nation at 35.8 percent (29).  I have no records to show how the Great Depression effected the Pearson family, but with such wide spread financial distress it is hard to image they lived through this period unharmed.
.
The 1930 Federal Census shows the family living at East 33rd South, Precinct 104, Salt Lake County, Utah, USA.

Their last child ##Child## Pearson was born on ## 1932 in Murray, Salt Lake County, Utah, USA.

Alton’s father John Peter Pearson died on 03 August 1936 in Duchesne, Duchesne County, Utah, USA from heart failure (4).

The 1940 Federal Census states the family lived at East 45 South Street, Murray, Salt Lake County, Utah, USA.  According to the census Alton was a Powder man in Mining.  A powder man works in the powder house of a mine and delivers explosives.  He is responsible for ensuring explosives are stored properly.  A powder man should be in good health, good eyesight with an experience in mining, quarrying and handling explosives (24).

Alton’s mother Sarah Ellen Mathis died on 18 December 1943 in Brigham, Salt Lake County, Utah, USA.

In 1952 Alton lived at 92 Cyprus Street, Copperton, Utah and worked as a Machinist in Mining.

Alton died on 10 January 1952 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah, USA in a Salt Lake Hospital from Carcinoma left kidney.  He was buried on 14 January 1952 in Murray City Cemetery, Murray, Salt Lake County, Utah.
